About

Camera Department was founded in Chicago in 2013 by photographers Nathan Kirkman and Anna Knott.

Our name comes from the camera department on a film set—the group responsible for interpreting a director's vision and translating it into images. It's a role built on collaboration, judgment, and execution.

We built Camera Department around the same philosophy.

We believe that great photography and motion aren't defined by a particular style or piece of equipment. They're the result of understanding the idea, understanding the audience, and making hundreds of thoughtful decisions throughout the creative process.

Sometimes those decisions are visual. Sometimes they're logistical. Sometimes they're creative. Sometimes they're as simple as knowing when to do less.

We work with brands, agencies, and creative teams to produce commercial photography and motion, contributing wherever we can make the work stronger—from creative development and production through final delivery.

The camera may be in our name, but it has never been the point. Good work is the accumulation of good decisions.
